- When I think of hot dogs, I think of chili. When I think of chili, I think of hot dogs. 🌭
I’m kicking up my hot dog bar with @bluerunnerfoods Chili.
Happy Memorial Day, folks.
Kicked Up Blue Runner Chili for a Grilled Hotdog Bar
2 tablespoons vegetable or olive oil
1 ½ pounds ground beef, ground turkey, or other ground protein of choice
1 yellow onion, finely chopped
1 poblano chile, stem and seeds removed, chopped
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon ground cumin
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons minced garlic (6 large cloves)
2 tablespoons finely chopped cilantro stems
One 27-ounce can Blue Runner Chili Starter, either “Homestyle” or “4-Bean”
One 16- ounce Blue Runner Creole Style Red Beans, Navy Beans, or Black Beans
1 cup water
2 tablespoons cilantro leaves, coarsely chopped
1 beer (your favorite, any beer will do)
2 packages hot dogs
Hot dog buns
Hot dog garnishes of choice, such as: minced red onions, pickled onions, yellow mustard, Creole mustard, ketchup, pickle relish, dill relish, grated cheese, sliced or pickled jalapenos, Queso, grated cheddar, sauerkraut, crumbled bacon, coleslaw, diced tomatoes
Heat a Dutch oven or other high-sided sauté pan over medium-high heat and add the oil. When hot, add the beef, onion, poblano, chili powder and cumin and season with salt and pepper. Cook, breaking meat up with a wooden spoon, until the meat is browned and the vegetables are soft. Add the garlic and cilantro stems and cook until fragrant, then stir in the chili starter, canned beans, and water. Bring to a simmer and cook until flavors have come together and chili has the desired consistency, usually 15 to 20 minutes. Taste and adjust the seasoning, if necessary, then stir in the cilantro leaves. Set aside and keep warm while you prepare the hot dogs. (Note: if necessary, add a bit of water to adjust thickness to suit your liking.)
To cook the hot dogs, add the beer to a skillet or wide sauté pan and heat to simmering over medium-high heat. Add the hot dogs and simmer until heated through, usually about 4 to 6 minutes.
Serve the hot dogs on buns garnished as desired. Enjoy!
