- From “Autumn Fairy Tale” and “Full House” to “Descendants of the Sun”, and then to “The Glory” in the Netflix era, Song Hye Kyo’s(@kyo1122)name has remained at the center of K-dramas’ journey from Asia to the world. She has sustained her popularity for more than 25 years. At the beginning of this year, Song Hye Kyo completed a year-long shoot for her new drama “Tantara”. Set in South Korea’s entertainment industry from the 1960s to the 1980s, the story is an ensemble narrative about music, ambition, and the changing times. Min-ja, played by Song Hye Kyo, is a character who repeatedly struggles between reality and dreams in that era. For an entire year, she lived within this character.
Song Hye Kyo has never considered herself a born actor. Even today, she still says acting is very difficult. “Every character is a life I have never lived.” She has to understand and study them, and even, little by little, “live as that person.” This sense of difficulty has not disappeared with experience; on the contrary, it has become a method, keeping her cautious and uncertain. In performance, she allows everything to become extreme. Emotions that would not happen in real life, or would not be allowed to happen—repression, anger, hatred and pain that cannot be released—are all entrusted to the character.
When awards, applause and attention came rushing toward Song Hye Kyo, she barely paused.“The moment I stepped off the stage after receiving the award (The Blue Dragon Series Awards), all that joy and all those wonderful feelings were already over.” She left the happiness and excitement on the stage, coming down only as her relaxed self. There was only one thing to do next: enter the next character.
