And yes, they’re working overtime. 🌺 And while bees and butterflies often get the spotlight, pollinators come in all shapes and sizes, all working different shifts. Moths, bats, beetles and even flies help plants reproduce by moving pollen from flower to flower. Without them, many of the foods and ecosystems we rely on simply wouldn’t exist. The good news? Even small actions can help support them. Here are a few ways to make your space more pollinator friendly: 🌼 Plant native flowers whenever possible. Native plants have evolved alongside local pollinators and help provide the food and habitat they need. 🌼 Think beyond one season. Pollinators need nectar and pollen from spring through fall, so a diverse garden with blooms across seasons can make a big difference. 🌼 Leave a little room for nature to be nature. Less mowing, fewer pesticides and even tolerating a few dandelions can help create important food sources. 🌼 No backyard? No problem. Window boxes, balconies and community gardens can still become tiny pollinator havens. Some work the day shift, others the night shift. Hummingbirds hover between blooms while moths and bats take over after dark. No matter the hour, it’s a reminder that some of nature’s hardest workers are also some of its smallest. 🐝

Caption: Yellow pitcher plants are passive pitfall traps, luring insects with sweet nectar into tall, slippery tubes where they fall into digestive fluids. Interior design? 10/10. Guest safety? None whatsoever. While they’re not exactly the hostess with the mostest, yellow pitcher plants are a vital part of our wetland ecosystems. The Nature Conservancy is working hard to protect incredible species like this one, which is native exclusively to the southeastern United States (specifically the Green Swamp Preserve in @tnc_nc .)

Caption: "Wildflowers... in spring? Groundbreaking." 🌼 Actually... kind of. For just a few short weeks each spring, forests across North America fill with spring ephemerals: delicate wildflowers that bloom before the trees overhead leaf out and block the sunlight. Trillium, bloodroot, trout lily and wood anemone all take advantage of this brief window, carpeting forest floors in color before disappearing again by summer. Some, like bloodroot, only bloom for a few days, making the season feel even more fleeting. But these blooms are far more fragile than they look. Many spring ephemerals take years to reach flowering size, which is why staying on marked trails and leaving flowers undisturbed matters. These flowers help feed early pollinators emerging after winter and can signal a healthy forest ecosystem. Supporting native plants at home, removing invasive species where you can and protecting the forests and floodplains these blooms depend on all help keep spring wildflower seasons thriving. Not only do we share it with other humans, but it's also the home of that osprey on its way to feed its chicks. The otter swimming with her pup on her belly to keep warm and safe. The little sea turtle at the beginning of its life in the vast ocean and a mother bear protecting her cubs. And those tiny species you see flying, jumping, shining, or simply growing around you? It's their home, too. “Biological diversity” is a big way of saying the variety of life on Earth...diversity in nature. And it is essential for all life on earth and on each of us to protect it. When we do, we protect food security, stable ecosystems and economies, climate regulation, human health, and more. Right now, we are losing biodiversity faster than at any time in human history. Nature can’t keep up with the accelerating pace of climate change. Species are going extinct and ecosystems are off-balance. Up to 1 million known plant and animal species could disappear by 2050. Let’s put the work in to protect biodiversity. Caption: We’re grateful to @expedia for its support through the Expedia Trails Fund, helping care for special places across the U.S. At Cascade Head Preserve in Oregon, trail improvements will help protect sensitive habitat while creating a safer experience for visitors. In Illinois, work at Pembroke Savanna Preserve will expand access and welcome more people to explore this culturally rich landscape. And in Utah, the boardwalk at the Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve will be rebuilt—ensuring visitors can continue to experience this vital wetland for years to come. Together, we’re helping care for these places so they can be explored and protected for generations to come.
