Caption: Antartica's 'Doomsday' glacier's giant ice shelf is about to break away⁠ ⁠ Antarctica’s most threatened glacier is about to be further destabilised, as the floating ice shelf in front of Thwaites glacier is set to break away.⁠ ⁠ Dubbed the “doomsday glacier”, Thwaites is about the size of Britain, but it is shrinking rapidly and is already responsible for 4 per cent of all global sea-level rise. Caption: Over the past 150 years, Earth’s entire surface has been warming, except for one patch of the north Atlantic. Located south-east of Greenland, this area has cooled by as much as 1°C and is known as the “warming hole” or the “cold blob”.⁠ ⁠ Scientists have been split over why this cold blob exists, but the latest evidence backs up the idea that it is caused by a weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), the system of currents that transports warmth from the tropics to Europe.⁠ ⁠ The AMOC carries warm, salty water from the Gulf of Mexico towards the north Atlantic, where it cools and sinks, flowing back south along the ocean floor. Caption: What is the science behind manifestation? 🧠⁠ ⁠ This week on Change Your Mind, we tackle the slightly controversial subject of manifesting. It might sound a bit woo, but hosts Cat de Lange and Helen Thomson get stuck into whether there is any proper science behind the practice, and if so, what is going on in the brain?⁠ ⁠ One promising area of research is sports psychology. Caption: World’s largest scorpion revealed from 415-million-year-old fossils⁠ ⁠ A giant scorpion that once roamed what is now England and Wales has been confirmed as the largest of its kind ever to exist, thanks to new research led by scientists at the Natural History Museum.⁠ ⁠ Measuring around a metre in length and armed with pincers over 16 centimetres long, Praearcturus gigas would have been a formidable predator stalking floodplains around 415 million years ago.⁠ ⁠ Remarkably, the fossils used to identify Praearcturus have been held in the Museum’s collection for more than 150 years. Caption: Some of the microbes lingering on the 5300-year-old remains of “Ötzi the Iceman” may still be metabolically active, despite being kept in icy conservation conditions.⁠ ⁠ Ötzi’s mummified body was discovered in 1991 thawing out of an Alpine glacier close to the border of Austria and Italy. Caption: A daily pill doubles the survival time of people with pancreatic cancer, one of the most aggressive and difficult-to-treat forms of the condition, even after they have stopped responding to chemotherapy. What’s more, the convenient pill has fewer side effects than standard chemotherapy.⁠ ⁠ “It’s a transformative treatment,” says Pilar Acedo at University College London, who wasn’t involved in the research. “For decades, [survival outcomes] haven’t changed for pancreatic cancer. [The new treatment] gives you double the amount of time to enjoy your life, be with your family and do things that you would like to do.”⁠ ⁠ About 70 per cent of people with pancreatic cancer are diagnosed at an advanced stage. A combination of no routine screening and vague symptoms, like a sore back, means that the condition is usually spotted when it has spread elsewhere. Caption: A virus has stopped pancreatic cancer in its tracks in three people in a clinical trial in the US. Further evaluation is needed in larger trials, but the early results are encouraging, especially since only small doses of the virus were administered for initial safety testing.⁠ ⁠ “We only injected one-tenth of the dose we are eventually aiming at, so the efficacy is better than I expected, especially as this is pancreatic cancer,” says Masato Yamamoto at the University of Minnesota, who led the development of the viral treatment.⁠ ⁠ Pancreatic cancer is notorious for being the deadliest type of the condition. One reason is that symptoms tend to appear late, when the cancer has already spread and cannot be surgically removed.
