Caption: South African opposition politician Julius Malema has been sentenced to prison time for firing a rifle in ⁠the air at a party rally. Malema, the leader of the far-left opposition Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), was handed a five-year sentence on Thursday by Magistrate Twanet Olivier. Malema, who is one of South Africa’s most prominent politicians, was convicted last year of charges, including unlawful possession of a ⁠firearm and discharging a weapon in a public place over the 2018 incident at a stadium in the Eastern Cape province. The 45-year-old leader of the fourth-biggest party in parliament had pleaded not guilty, arguing the gun was a toy. His defence said the shots were only intended to be celebratory. “It wasn’t … an impulsive act,” the magistrate said. “It was the event of the evening.” The court sentenced Malema to five years for unlawful possession of a firearm and two years for unlawful possession of ammunition. It gave him fines for ⁠three other offences, including discharging a firearm in a built-up area, with ⁠prison time if he doesn’t pay. The sentences will run at the same time.

With Olivia we speak about how storytelling can be used as a tool of resistance, what ethical storytelling means and how we can avoid telling stories on behalf of others. Which role does storytelling play in the process of social change? We also discuss the importance of the project of The Sankara Pan African library, a community-focused library in Kampala, Uganda, founded to promote education and Black liberation. Olivia speaks about the need to challenge dominant narratives and amplify marginalized voices. She highlights the Pan African Library project as a tangible effort to promote decolonial literature and to create a safe space for community healing. She calls for support in fundraising, community engagement and skill-sharing to establish the library, stressing the importance of ethical storytelling and collective action in social justice work.

Caption: Today March 25th marks the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. ▪︎ It is a time for reflection and for education. ▪︎ Despite myths to the contrary, enslaved Africans enriched the Americas not just through their labour but also through a transfer of vital skills and knowledge. ▪︎ In addition, rather than accepting their fate, they engaged in powerful acts of resistance. ▪︎ The United Nations works to highlight such stories through its Outreach Programme on the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Slavery, which is managed by the Department of Global Communications, and the Routes of Enslaved Peoples Project, which is run by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

They are calling for the immediate reversal of all suspensions imposed on NGO'S as well the unfreezing of Bank accounts belonging to effected Organization, arguing that the measures have significantly disrupted operation and weakened civic engagement across the country

Caption: The Rev. Jesse Jackson, a towering civil rights icon who battled alongside Martin Luther King Jr., negotiated global hostage releases, and shamed corporations for their lack of corporate diversity and failure to support voting rights, has died. He was 84. Jackson was hospitalized on Nov. 12 following a lengthy battle with the neuromuscular disease progressive supranuclear palsy, a condition similar to Parkinson's disease. He was later released from the hospital later that month. Jackson was a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, a Democratic presidential candidate and one of the world's best-known Black activists. Despite the illness that softened his voice and weakened his steps, he had continued to advocate for civil rights, and was arrested twice in 2021 over his objection to the Senate filibuster rule. That same year he and his wife Jacqueline were hospitalized with COVID-19 complications at a Chicago hospital. "His longevity is part of the story," said Rashad Robinson, the former president of the seven-million-member online justice organization Color of Change. "This is someone who had so many chances to do something else. And this is what chose to do with his life." Jackson's death comes amidst a rising tide of white nationalism and voting-rights access issues, and follows the loss of other civil rights icons, including former Rep. John Lewis, who died in 2020.
